Linocut is one of the most widely known and used forms of relief printing. In relief work the raised surface of the block is area most important in the making of the print. This can vary from the image of delicate veins on the back of a leaf to the rough textures on a concrete floor, or in this case, the raised surface of a block. The impression can be made by many methods, the most common of which is hand burnishing; rubbing the paper against the block by hand.
A sheet of linoleum is used for a block and it’s the raised surface containing the positive image that is printed. The background area or negative space is carved away creating the white or non printed areas.
